General FAQs

What Are Dr. Nodwell's Qualifications?

I'm a fully qualified plastic surgeon certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). My journey in medicine began at McGill University, where I graduated with honours from the Faculty of Medicine. I then completed my plastic surgery residency at Dalhousie University, graduating in 2004.

Later in my career, I completed two prestigious fellowships: one in Microsurgery and Advanced Reconstructive Techniques (Breast) from the University of British Columbia in 2010, and another in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery from the University of Toronto in 2011. This additional training allows me to bring advanced techniques and a comprehensive understanding of both reconstructive and aesthetic principles to every procedure I perform.

How Long Has Dr. Nodwell Been Practicing in Ottawa?

I've been serving patients in Ottawa since 2005, giving me nearly two decades of experience in our community. My commitment to this city runs deep — I co-founded The Ottawa Clinic because I saw unrealized potential right here in our nation's capital. While Montreal and Vancouver had established reputations in cosmetic surgery, I wondered why Ottawa didn't have a nationally recognized plastic surgery center. Since opening in 2012 and evolving in 2020, The Ottawa Clinic has become that destination where patients from Ottawa and beyond know they can receive world-class aesthetic care.

What Procedures Does Dr. Nodwell Specialize In?

My practice focuses on three main areas where I can make the most meaningful impact.

For breast surgery, including augmentations, lifts and reductions, I draw heavily on my fellowship training in microsurgery and advanced breast techniques to ensure results that are both beautiful and natural. Body contouring procedures like tummy tucks and liposuction allow me to help patients achieve the silhouette they choose, especially after weight loss or pregnancy. Facial plastic surgery demands particular finesse, and I've developed techniques that refresh and rejuvenate while maintaining your distinctive features.

What If I Don't Know Which Treatment or Procedure Is Right for Me?

Many patients know they'd like to make a change but aren't sure what would help them achieve their goals. That's completely normal, and it's exactly why I take a collaborative approach to treatment planning.

During your consultation, I listen carefully to understand your concerns and desired outcomes. Once I understand what you'd like to improve, I explain your options in detail, using advanced tools like Crisalix 3D Imaging and TouchMD to help you visualize what's possible.

Together, we will create a treatment plan that matches your goals, lifestyle and budget that you will feel great about.

More

What Should I Expect During My Consultation?

Your consultation is our opportunity to get to know one another. We'll spend about 45 minutes together, during which we'll talk about your medical history, examine the areas you'd like to improve and discuss what you hope to achieve. I may use technology to enhance our communication and help you visualize your potential results. I'll also take time to explain your recommended procedures, including the recovery process, risks and expected results.

By the end of our consultation, you'll receive a detailed treatment plan and cost estimate. My team and I want you to feel completely informed and confident about your choices, so I encourage you to ask questions and share any concerns you may have. There's no pressure – my goal is simply to help you make the best decision for yourself.

What Makes Dr. Nodwell's Approach Different From Other Plastic Surgeons?

If I had a "surgeon superpower" it would be my ability to translate complicated medical and surgical ideas into understandable concepts for my patients. I don't use unnecessary jargon, and I certainly don't talk down to my patients. My philosophy centers on the belief that you didn't choose the body you were born with, but you can choose the body you live with. I'm here to help you make that choice with confidence. This combination of surgical expertise, clear communication and care for the whole person is what my patients tell me sets their experience apart.

More

Is There a Consultation Fee?

There is a $100 (plus HST) consultation fee to secure your appointment time.

More

How Do I Know Whether I'm a Good Candidate for Plastic Surgery?

During our consultation, I'll conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure you're medically suitable for your desired procedure. Being a good candidate goes beyond physical health — it's also about having clear goals and understanding both the benefits and limitations of plastic surgery.

If I don't think a procedure will achieve your goals, or if I believe a different approach would serve you better, I'll tell you. Sometimes the best recommendation I can make is to wait, to try nonsurgical options first or to adjust expectations. You will always receive my honest, experienced opinions.

More

What Are the Payment Options?

I understand that plastic surgery is an investment, and I want to make the process as manageable as possible for my patients. My office accepts a variety of payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, cash, bank drafts and certified cheques.

If you are interested in financing your procedure, we've partnered with Beautifi, Medicard and Credit Medical to offer convenient monthly payment plans. The application process is straightforward, and my team is always happy to help you understand your options.

I believe in transparent pricing and helping patients understand their financial obligations upfront. If you have questions about costs, financing or insurance coverage, my staff and I are here to help you navigate the details.

More

Does Insurance Cover Any Plastic Surgery Procedures?

While most aesthetic procedures aren't covered by insurance, certain reconstructive surgeries may qualify for coverage. Procedures that address functional issues, such as breast reduction to relieve back pain or reconstruction after cancer treatment, might be partially or fully covered depending on your insurance plan.

My team has extensive experience working with insurance companies and can help you understand what documentation is needed for potential coverage. We can provide the necessary medical documentation and assist with the pre-authorization process when applicable.

More

What Is the Cancellation Policy?

  • More than 6 weeks before surgery: Full refund, less $500 re-booking fee.
  • Between 4–6 weeks: 80% of fee credited to new date.
  • Within 4 weeks: No refunds.

Exceptions may be considered for compassionate or medical circumstances at the surgeon’s discretion.

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book My Surgery?

Generally, I recommend booking your surgery date at least 3 months in advance to secure your preferred timing. Some patients book even further out to accommodate work schedules, special events or vacations.

During our consultation, we'll discuss your timeline and any important dates you're working around. My scheduling team excels at finding dates that work with your life. We can occasionally accommodate urgent situations when medically appropriate. The key is planning ahead to ensure you have adequate time for preoperative preparation and postoperative recovery.

More

Does Dr. Nodwell Accept Out-Of-Town Patients?

I regularly welcome patients from beyond Ottawa, and my team and I have extensive experience making the process of travelling for surgery smooth and convenient. We can recommend comfortable accommodations near our facility and provide guidance about local transportation.

More

Where Does Dr. Nodwell Perform Surgery?

I perform all surgeries at The Ottawa Clinic, which I co-founded to create a premier destination for plastic surgery in our nation's capital. Our state-of-the-art surgical facility exceeds all provincial standards for safety and quality. It is equipped with advanced technology and staffed by experienced professionals who share my commitment to patient safety and exceptional care.

More

What Is Dr. Nodwell's Approach to Patient Safety?

Every decision I make, from patient selection to surgical technique to postoperative care, is guided by safety considerations. I maintain the highest standards for sterile technique, use advanced monitoring throughout your procedure, work with a team of experienced professionals and ensure you have appropriate medical clearance before surgery.

I'm selective about which procedures I perform and won't compromise safety for aesthetic goals. This means sometimes saying no to requests that carry unnecessary risk, or recommending a staged approach when a single surgery would be inadvisable. My team and I stay current with the latest safety protocols and best practices in plastic surgery, because your well-being always comes first.

More

How Does Dr. Nodwell Ensure Natural-Looking Results?

Natural-looking results come from understanding that beauty lies in proportion and harmony, not in changing individual features. I never use a one-size-fits-all approach because what looks natural on one person may look obviously surgical on another.

During surgery, I employ techniques refined through my fellowship training and decades of experience to minimize scarring and create results that age gracefully with you. Whether I'm ensuring your breast implants move naturally with your body or creating a facelift that preserves your ability to express emotion, every decision I make supports the goal of results that complement and enhance your natural beauty.

More

Can I See Before and After Photos of Dr. Nodwell's Work?

Of course. Reviewing before and after photos is an essential part of understanding what's possible and setting realistic expectations. During your consultation, I'll show you results from patients who had similar starting points and goals to yours. You can also view my online galleries here.

I maintain an extensive gallery of results across all procedures I perform, and I'm always happy to show additional examples if you want more. Seeing real results from real patients helps you understand what we can achieve together.

Breast Augmentation

Do I Need a Breast Lift or a Breast Augmentation?

Understanding whether you need a breast lift, breast augmentation, or both depends primarily on your specific concerns and aesthetic goals. Breast augmentation addresses size and volume, creating fuller breasts through implants or fat transfer. However, it cannot significantly improve severe sagging or dramatically change breast position on the chest.

A breast lift, on the other hand, repositions existing breast tissue to a more youthful height and can improve the position of your nipples and areolas. While a lift creates a perkier appearance, it cannot add significant volume or substantially increase breast size.

Many women choose to combine these procedures to achieve comprehensive improvement in both breast position and volume. During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell will evaluate factors such as skin elasticity, breast position, and tissue quality to recommend the approach that will best achieve your desired results. Simple tests, like evaluating where your nipples sit in relation to your breast crease, can help determine if a lift would benefit you.

If you're unsure which procedure might be right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Nodwell to discuss your goals and explore your options. Together, we can develop a surgical plan that addresses all your concerns and delivers beautiful, natural-looking results.

More

How Should I Prepare for a Breast Augmentation?

Before your surgery date, you should choose a trusted friend or family member who can provide transportation to and from the procedure location and stay with you for the first 24 hours of recovery.

Most patients require one to two weeks away from work or professional obligations. It's important to communicate openly with your employer about your upcoming surgery and make arrangements for your absence well in advance.

You will also need to adhere to physical restrictions, particularly regarding lifting and strenuous activities, for several weeks following your initial recovery period. While these temporary adjustments may feel inconvenient, they are crucial for protecting your results and ensuring proper healing.

One of the most important choices you can make leading up to your breast augmentation is to prioritize your health. That's why our office asks that all forms of nicotine be eliminated at least six weeks before surgery, as nicotine compromises your body's healing ability and increases surgical risks.

We will also provide you with personalized medication instructions since your medication regimen may need to be temporarily modified or discontinued to ensure a safe procedure and recovery. As a general rule of thumb, we also always recommend that you maintain a balanced diet to give your body the best tools for recovery.

Preparing a Recovery Station

A well-organized recovery station is essential for a smooth and comfortable healing process after breast augmentation. By preparing this dedicated space before your surgery, you'll ensure everything you need is within easy reach during those crucial first days of recovery.

Your recovery station should include:

  • Medications, organized by schedule
  • Comfortable pillows for elevation and support
  • Entertainment options that don't require physical strain
  • Clean gauze and any medical supplies recommended by Dr. Nodwell
  • Loose, front-closing clothing for easy changes

Your recovery station should be a comfortable area where you can rest and relax without straining to reach necessary items. Consider setting up in a space that allows you to easily transition between sitting upright and reclining, such as a bed with adjustable positioning or a comfortable recliner with supportive pillows.

Keep essential items within arm's reach to avoid unnecessary stretching or reaching, which could strain your healing tissue. A small table or rolling cart next to your chosen rest area provides an ideal surface for frequently used items. Consider keeping your phone charger, television remote, and any entertainment items like books or tablets easily accessible.

Remember to position necessary items at a height that won't require lifting your arms above chest level, as this movement may be restricted during your initial recovery phase. Having everything thoughtfully arranged before your procedure will allow you to focus entirely on rest and healing when you return home.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from a Breast Augmentation?

When you choose breast augmentation with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement in both the size and shape of your breasts. While your initial results will be visible immediately after surgery, your final outcome will continue to develop over several months as your tissues heal and your implants settle into their optimal position.

Most women find their breast augmentation results provide lasting enhancement to their figure. Your implants can maintain their shape and position for many years, though natural aging, weight fluctuations, and gravity will continue to affect your breast tissue over time.

While implants are designed to be long-lasting, many surgeons recommend evaluating them every 10-15 years. This timeline isn't because implants automatically need replacement at a certain point, but rather because this allows for periodic assessment of implant integrity and gives you an opportunity to discuss any desired changes in size or shape.

The choice to replace implants is often a personal one. Some women may choose to replace their implants earlier to change their size or type, while others may have their original implants for 20 years or more without issues. Regular imaging, such as ultrasounds or MRIs, can help monitor implant condition and ensure continued safety.

Pregnancy and significant weight changes can affect your results, which is why many women choose to undergo breast augmentation after completing their families. However, if you do become pregnant after your procedure, your implants will not interfere with pregnancy or breastfeeding capability.

More

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

The cost of breast augmentation reflects several factors that contribute to achieving optimal results, including the expertise and experience of your surgeon, location, and many other factors. Typically, breast augmentation at Nodwell Plastic Surgery starts at around $16,000.

We understand that breast augmentation represents a significant investment in yourself. To help make your goals more attainable, we offer several financing options through trusted third-party providers. These plans can help you manage the cost of your procedure with monthly payments that fit your budget.

While cost is an important consideration, choosing the right surgeon and surgical plan for your breast augmentation should be your primary focus. Dr. Nodwell's expertise, combined with our commitment to patient safety and satisfaction, ensures you receive exceptional value for your investment.

Breast Lift

Should I Get a Breast Lift or a Breast Lift With Implants?

Understanding whether you need a breast lift alone or a combination procedure with implants depends primarily on your breast volume and aesthetic goals.

A breast lift addresses position and shape without significantly changing size. If you're satisfied with your breast volume but concerned about sagging or nipple position, a lift alone may provide the rejuvenation you seek. This approach works particularly well when you have adequate natural breast tissue that simply needs repositioning.

Adding implants to your lift becomes appropriate when you desire both improved position and increased volume. This combination approach, sometimes called an augmentation-mastopexy, addresses multiple concerns simultaneously. It's ideal for women who have experienced significant volume loss after pregnancy or weight reduction or those who have always wanted larger breasts along with improved position.

During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell will evaluate several factors to recommend the most appropriate approach. These include your natural breast tissue quality, skin elasticity, degree of sagging, and aesthetic preferences. Simple assessment techniques help determine if additional volume would enhance your results

If you're uncertain which approach might be right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Nodwell to discuss your goals and explore your options. Together, we can develop a surgical plan that addresses your unique concerns and delivers the beautiful, natural-looking results you desire.

How Should I Prepare for a Breast Lift?

Proper preparation plays a vital role in your surgical success and recovery. Starting your preparation several weeks before your scheduled surgery date ensures you're physically and mentally ready for the procedure and healing process.

From a medical standpoint, Dr. Nodwell may request laboratory tests or a medical evaluation to confirm you're in good health for surgery. You'll need to adjust certain medications and supplements that could increase bleeding risk or interfere with healing. Dr. Nodwell will review your current medications and provide specific guidance about which ones to temporarily discontinue.

If you smoke, we highly recommend that you stop at least six weeks before surgery. Nicotine significantly compromises your body's healing ability, restricts blood flow to tissues, and increases complication risks. This requirement isn't just about the day of surgery—it's about optimizing your body's ability to heal properly afterward.

Most patients need one to two weeks off from work or professional obligations. For several weeks following surgery, you'll also need to adhere to physical restrictions, particularly regarding lifting and strenuous activities.

Arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. During your initial recovery, you'll need assistance with daily activities, especially those involving reaching or lifting, which could strain your healing tissues.

Maintain a stable, healthy diet leading up to surgery. Focus on nutrient-rich foods that support healing, including adequate protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Proper hydration is equally important—aim for at least eight glasses of water daily in the weeks before surgery.

Preparing Your Recovery Station

Create a comfortable recovery area in your home before surgery day. This dedicated space should include:

  • Prescribed medications and recovery supplies within easy reach
  • Button-front or zip-up tops that don't require lifting over your head
  • Extra pillows for support and elevation during rest
  • Entertainment options to keep you occupied during recovery
  • A water bottle and healthy snacks that don't require preparation
  • Your phone charger and important contact numbers readily available

Position these items at waist level to avoid unnecessary reaching or stretching during recovery. Having this thoughtfully arranged space allows you to focus entirely on rest and healing when you return home.

The night before surgery, follow Dr. Nodwell's specific pre-operative instructions regarding bathing and fasting. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your surgical appointment, and remove all jewelry and nail polish before arriving. Remember to bring any prescribed medications or post-operative garments to the surgical center.

Take time to mentally prepare for your recovery journey. Set realistic expectations about your immediate appearance and understand that your final results will continue to develop over several months as swelling subsides and tissues settle.

What Results Can I Expect From a Breast Lift?

When you choose a breast lift with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement in both the position and shape of your breasts. While initial changes are visible immediately after surgery, your final outcome will continue to develop over several months as tissues heal and adapt to their new contours.

Most women experience dramatic enhancement in their breast appearance, including more youthful positioning, improved projection, and better-centered nipples that face forward rather than downward. The removal of excess skin eliminates sagging, while internal tissue reshaping creates firmer, more youthful contours. When combined with advanced techniques like the internal brassiere, these improvements provide enhanced upper pole fullness and superior long-term support.

Your incisions will initially appear pink or red and may feel firm to the touch. Over time, they typically fade to a lighter color and soften, though individual healing varies. Dr. Nodwell carefully places incisions to minimize visibility, following natural breast contours where most bras and swimwear can conceal them. While incision lines are a permanent aspect of surgery, most patients find them a worthwhile trade-off for their improved breast shape and position.

Breast lift results can last many years when maintained with proper support and a stable weight. While natural aging continues, your improved breast contours should remain significantly better than if you had not undergone surgery. Factors that can affect the longevity of your results include pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and your skin's natural elasticity.

For women who combine their lifts with implants, longevity may involve additional considerations regarding implant maintenance. During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell will discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation and anatomy, helping you understand how your unique factors might influence your long-term outcome.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?

The overall cost of your breast procedure depends on several factors, including your surgeon's expertise, the complexity of your procedure, and the techniques required to address your specific concerns. At Nodwell Plastic Surgery, breast lift procedures typically start at around $18,000, though your specific cost may vary based on your unique surgical plan (with or without implants, internal bra, etc.)

When evaluating the cost of your breast lift, consider that the price encompasses not just the surgery itself but comprehensive care throughout your journey. We understand that a breast lift is a significant financial investment. So, to help make your goals more attainable, we offer several financing options through trusted third-party providers. These plans help you manage the cost of your procedure with monthly payments that fit your budget.

While cost is an important consideration, choosing the right surgeon and surgical plan for your breast lift should remain your primary focus. Dr. Nodwell's technical expertise in advanced breast lifting techniques, combined with our commitment to patient safety and satisfaction, ensures you receive exceptional value for your investment.

Breast Augmentation & Lift

Is It Better To Get a Breast Augmentation and Lift Together or Separately?

For most patients, combining breast augmentation with a lift is more advantageous than staged procedures. A single surgery means one recovery period, one anesthesia experience, and often lower overall costs than two separate procedures. Additionally, combining procedures allows for better aesthetic planning. Your implants and lift are designed to work together from the start, creating more harmonious and predictable results.

Staged procedures may be recommended in certain situations. If you have severe ptosis, extremely thin breast tissue, or significant asymmetry, performing the procedures separately might yield superior outcomes. Some patients also prefer to see how a lift alone affects their appearance before committing to implants.

During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell will evaluate a variety of factors to recommend whether a combined or staged approach would serve you best.

More

How Should I Prepare for a Breast Augmentation and Lift?

Health optimization starts weeks before your surgery. If you smoke, you must quit completely at least six weeks before your procedure, as nicotine severely compromises healing and increases complication risks. Review all medications and supplements you take with Dr. Nodwell, as many need to be discontinued before surgery. Focus on maintaining excellent nutrition with plenty of protein and hydration to give your body the best foundation for healing.

Create a comfortable recovery space at home with medications, water, healthy snacks, entertainment and other essentials within easy reach. Make sure you have shirts that button or zip in the front. You won't be able to raise your arms overhead for a period after surgery.

Arrange for help during your initial recovery. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery and assist you for at least the first 48 hours. Plan for time away from work and arrange childcare or household help for at least the first week.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from a Breast Augmentation and Lift?

When you choose a breast augmentation and lift with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement in the size, shape, and position of your breasts. Your results will include fuller, rounder breasts with improved upper pole fullness, complemented by a lifted, youthful position with forward-facing nipples.

While you'll see dramatic improvement immediately after surgery, your final results develop over several months. Initially, your breasts may sit overly high on your chest and feel firm. Over the next three to six months, your implants will settle into their optimal position and your breasts will soften. The incision lines will fade significantly over 12 to 18 months.

To protect your investment, maintain a stable weight and follow Dr. Nodwell's long-term care recommendations. Regular follow-ups allow us to monitor your implants and ensure your results continue to meet your expectations.

More

How Much Does Breast Augmentation & Lift Cost?

The cost of a breast augmentation and lift reflects the complexity of performing two procedures in one surgery.

While combining procedures is an investment, it often provides better value than scheduling surgeries separately. You can save on facility fees, anesthesia costs, and the indirect expenses of two separate recovery periods.

We support our patients in their efforts at responsible financial planning. We offer several financing options through trusted partners that can help you manage the cost with payment plans tailored to your budget. Our team can help you determine which plan is the best fit for your needs.

Liposuction

How Should I Prepare for Liposuction?

Proper preparation plays a crucial role in achieving optimal results from your liposuction procedure. Dr. Nodwell recommends beginning your preparation several weeks before your scheduled surgery date.

From a medical standpoint, you'll need to temporarily stop taking certain medications and supplements that could increase bleeding risk. Dr. Nodwell will review your current medications and provide specific guidance about which ones to adjust or discontinue. If you smoke, you must stop several weeks before surgery, as nicotine can significantly impact healing and increase complication risks.

Maintaining a stable weight and healthy diet leading up to surgery helps optimize your results. While you should continue your regular exercise routine until surgery, avoid starting any intense new fitness programs. Focus on nutrient-rich foods that support healing, and ensure adequate hydration in the weeks before your procedure.

Most patients need about one week away from their professional obligations, though this varies based on the number of areas treated and the physical demands of your job. Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. During your initial recovery period, you'll need assistance with daily activities, particularly those involving reaching or bending.

Preparing Your Recovery Station

Create a comfortable recovery area in your home before surgery day. This dedicated space should include:

  • Prescribed medications and recovery supplies
  • Loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to put on
  • Extra pillows for support and elevation
  • Entertainment options within easy reach
  • A water bottle and healthy snacks
  • Your phone and charger with important contact numbers

Position everything at a height that won't require stretching or bending during recovery. Having this thoughtfully arranged space allows you to focus entirely on rest and healing when you return home.

What Results Can I Expect From Liposuction?

The innovative technology used in liposuction creates noticeable improvements in your body contours. While some changes appear within weeks of your procedure, your results continue developing as swelling subsides and tissues adapt to their new shape.

You'll likely notice the most dramatic improvements between three and six months after surgery. The mechanical precision of power-assisted liposuction helps ensure smooth, even fat removal, minimizing the risk of surface irregularities that can occur with traditional techniques. Many patients find their clothes fit differently within the first month, but the refined definition and sculpted contours emerge as healing progresses.

The fat cells removed during your procedure don't regenerate, making your results permanent in the treated areas. However, maintaining your new contours depends on following a stable, healthy lifestyle. While remaining fat cells can still expand with weight gain, they typically do so in a more proportionate pattern. Many patients find their improved body contours motivate them to maintain healthy habits that preserve their results.

More

How Much Does a Liposuction Cost?

At Nodwell Plastic Surgery, power-assisted liposuction procedures start at $8,000 for a single area, with additional areas typically ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 each. Your specific cost will depend on the number of areas treated and the extent of correction needed.

We understand that investing in yourself is a significant decision. To help make your goals more attainable, we offer several financing options through trusted third-party providers. These plans can help you manage the cost of your procedure with monthly payments that fit your budget.

While cost is an important consideration, choosing the right surgeon and surgical approach should be your primary focus. Dr. Nodwell's expertise with power-assisted liposuction technology, combined with our commitment to patient safety and satisfaction, ensures you receive exceptional value for your investment.

Mommy Makeover

How Should I Prepare for a Mommy Makeover?

Since a Mommy Makeover combines multiple procedures, thorough preparation becomes essential for ensuring a smooth recovery and optimal results. Your preparation should begin several weeks before surgery by organizing support for your recovery period.

As a mother, your usual routine of lifting, carrying, and caring for children will need temporary modification. Arrange for reliable childcare assistance for at least two weeks, help with household duties, and a designated caregiver to assist you during the first few days after surgery.

Several weeks before your surgery date, you'll need to make important health adjustments. Stop smoking and avoid all nicotine products, as they can significantly impact healing. Some medications and supplements may need to be temporarily discontinued, and Dr. Nodwell will provide specific guidance based on your current regimen. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight and good nutrition in the weeks leading up to surgery helps ensure optimal results.

The week before surgery, focus on completing household tasks that would be difficult during recovery. Prepare and freeze meals for easy reheating, fill all prescribed medications, and ensure you have comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that opens in the front. You'll receive specific instructions about pre-surgery bathing and fasting requirements. Most importantly, confirm all your care arrangements for children and pets, as well as transportation to and from your surgical appointment.

Preparing Your Recovery Station

Transform a comfortable area of your home into a dedicated recovery zone where you can rest and heal. This space should include your medications organized by schedule, entertainment options within easy reach, your phone and charger, a water bottle and healthy snacks, extra pillows for elevation and support, and any medical supplies recommended by Dr. Nodwell. Position everything at a height that won't require bending or reaching, as your movement will be restricted during initial recovery.

Remember that thorough preparation allows you to focus entirely on rest and healing after your surgery. Our team remains available to answer any questions and provide guidance as you prepare for your transformation.

What Results Can I Expect From a Mommy Makeover?

When you choose a Mommy Makeover with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement throughout your treated areas. While initial changes become visible immediately after surgery, your final outcome continues to develop over several months as tissues heal and swelling subsides.

Most women experience dramatic enhancement in their overall figure, including lifted and shapelier breasts, a flatter and firmer abdomen, and more defined body contours. Removing excess skin eliminates looseness that persists after pregnancy, while muscle repair helps reduce the characteristic post-pregnancy abdominal protrusion. When combined with targeted liposuction, these improvements create more harmonious body proportions.

Your scars will initially appear pink or red and may feel firm. Over time, they typically fade to a lighter color and soften, though individual healing varies. Dr. Nodwell carefully places incisions where they can be concealed by most clothing and swimwear. While scars are a permanent part of surgery, most patients find them a worthwhile trade-off for their improved contours.

Mommy Makeover results can last many years when maintained with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. While natural aging continues, your improved body contours should remain significantly better than if you had not undergone surgery.

Living an active lifestyle after recovery helps maintain your results. While your improved contours will age naturally with you, staying committed to regular exercise and a balanced diet ensures you get the most from your investment in yourself.

Tummy Tuck

Do I Need a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

Understanding whether you need a tummy tuck or liposuction depends primarily on your skin elasticity and muscle tone. While both procedures can improve your abdominal contours, they address fundamentally different concerns.

Liposuction works best when you have good skin elasticity and primarily struggle with stubborn fat deposits. When your skin retains its natural ability to retract and tighten, removing fat alone can create smooth, defined results.

A tummy tuck becomes necessary when skin laxity and muscle weakness are your primary concerns. If your abdomen shows significant loose or hanging skin, stretch marks, or a persistent bulge caused by separated muscles, liposuction alone cannot address these issues. These conditions commonly develop after pregnancy or significant weight loss, when the skin and muscles have been stretched beyond their ability to naturally recover.

During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell can help you determine the most appropriate procedure. A simple test involves gently pinching the skin of your abdomen—if you can gather more than a few centimeters of tissue or if your skin shows signs of significant stretching, a tummy tuck likely offers the comprehensive improvement you seek. However, in some cases, combining both procedures provides optimal results, allowing Dr. Nodwell to address both excess fat and skin while tightening the underlying muscles.

How Should I Prepare for My Tummy Tuck?

Proper preparation plays a vital role in your surgical success and recovery. Dr. Nodwell recommends beginning your preparation several weeks before your scheduled surgery date to ensure optimal results.

From a medical standpoint, you will need to stop taking certain medications, supplements, and herbal remedies that could increase bleeding risk or interfere with healing. Dr. Nodwell will review your current medications and provide specific guidance about which ones to adjust or temporarily discontinue.

Maintaining a stable weight and healthy diet leading up to surgery helps optimize your results. Focus on nutrient-rich foods that support healing and ensure adequate protein intake. While you should continue your regular exercise routine until surgery, avoid starting any intense new fitness programs. Dr. Nodwell may recommend specific core-strengthening exercises to help prepare your muscles for recovery.

Schedule time off work—most patients need two to three weeks away from their professional obligations. Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours. During your initial recovery period, you'll need assistance with daily activities, particularly those involving lifting or reaching.

Setting Up Your Recovery Station

Before surgery, designate a comfortable area of your home as your recovery station. Your recovery station should include:

  • Prescribed medications and recovery supplies within arm's reach
  • Loose clothing that opens in front
  • Extra pillows for elevation and support
  • Entertainment options (books, tablets, etc.)
  • Water bottle and healthy snacks
  • Phone charger and a list of important contact numbers
  • Any necessary medical documents or post-operative instructions

Completing household tasks before surgery is also a good idea. Stock your kitchen with easy-to-prepare meals, fill prescriptions in advance, and finish any pressing home projects. Place commonly used items at waist level to avoid stretching or bending during recovery.

The day before surgery, follow Dr. Nodwell's specific pre-operative instructions regarding showering, eating, and drinking. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your surgical appointment, and remove all jewelry and nail polish. Remember to bring any prescribed medications or compression garments to the surgical center.

Take time to understand your recovery timeline and set realistic expectations. Review your post-operative instructions in advance, and write down any questions to discuss with Dr. Nodwell.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect From a Tummy Tuck?

When you choose tummy tuck surgery with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement in both the appearance and function of your abdominal area. While your initial results become visible immediately after surgery, your final outcome continues to develop over several months as tissues heal and swelling subsides.

Most patients experience dramatic improvement in their abdominal contours, including a flatter, firmer midsection and better-defined waistline. The removal of excess skin eliminates hanging or folding tissue that often persists after pregnancy or weight loss. When combined with muscle repair, a tummy tuck also typically reduces the protrusion caused by separated abdominal muscles, creating a smoother, more toned appearance.

Your scars will initially appear pink or red and may feel firm. Over time, they typically fade to a lighter color and soften, though individual healing varies. Dr. Nodwell carefully places incisions low on the abdomen where they can be concealed by most clothing and swimwear. While scars are a permanent part of surgery, most patients find them a worthwhile trade-off for their improved contours.

Tummy tuck results can last many years when maintained with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. While natural aging continues, your improved abdominal contours should remain significantly better than if you had not undergone surgery. However, future pregnancies or significant weight fluctuations can affect your results, which is why many patients choose to undergo tummy tuck surgery after completing their families and achieving a stable weight.

Do I Need a Facelift and Neck Lift?

Understanding whether you need a facelift and neck lift depends primarily on the extent of your facial aging and your specific aesthetic goals.

A facelift alone might be sufficient if your concerns are limited to the middle and lower face with minimal neck aging. This approach addresses jowling, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines while improving the upper neck.

A combined facelift and neck lift becomes necessary when you experience significant aging across both facial and neck areas. If you have pronounced jowls, deep facial folds, substantial neck laxity, platysmal banding, or excess fat under the chin, this comprehensive approach will deliver more thorough rejuvenation. While this combined technique involves more extensive surgery and recovery, it provides harmonious, longer-lasting results across both the face and neck.

During your consultation, Dr. Nodwell will evaluate several factors to recommend the most appropriate approach. These include your skin quality, degree of laxity, facial bone structure, and aesthetic goals. Considerations like the depth of your facial folds, the extent of jowling, and the condition of your neck tissues help determine whether a facelift alone or a combined procedure will best achieve your desired outcome.

Your age also influences this decision, though Dr. Nodwell evaluates each patient based on their unique aging pattern rather than chronology alone. Generally, younger patients with early signs of aging may achieve satisfactory results with a more limited approach, while those with more advanced aging typically benefit from the comprehensive rejuvenation that a full facelift and neck lift provides.

How Should I Prepare for a Full Facelift?

Proper preparation plays a vital role in your surgical success and recovery. Dr. Nodwell recommends beginning your preparation several weeks before your scheduled surgery date to ensure optimal results.

From a medical standpoint, you will need to stop taking certain medications, supplements, and herbal remedies that could increase bleeding risk or interfere with healing. These typically include aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and various herbal supplements. Dr. Nodwell will review your current medications and provide specific guidance about which ones to adjust or temporarily discontinue.

If you smoke, you should commit to quitting at least six weeks before and after surgery. Nicotine significantly restricts blood flow to facial tissues, dramatically increasing the risk of skin necrosis, delayed healing, and suboptimal results. This requirement isn't just about the day of surgery—it's about optimizing your body's ability to heal properly during the critical recovery phase.

Schedule at least two weeks away from work or professional obligations to allow for proper healing. Arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours. During your initial recovery period, you'll need assistance with daily activities and medications.

Setting Up Your Recovery Station

Before surgery, designate a comfortable area of your home as your recovery station. Consider including:

  • All prescribed medications organized and readily accessible
  • Extra pillows to keep your head elevated during rest
  • A wedge pillow for sleeping with your head raised
  • Cold compresses or ice packs for reducing swelling
  • Comfortable, button-front shirts that don't need to be pulled over your head
  • Entertainment options like books, magazines, or a tablet
  • A water bottle with a straw for easy hydration
  • Healthy snacks that require minimal preparation
  • Phone charger and important contact numbers within reach

Complete household tasks before surgery, such as grocery shopping, meal preparation, and laundry. Stock your refrigerator with easy-to-prepare, nutritious meals and snacks that support healing. Fill prescriptions in advance and gather any recommended recovery supplies like gentle cleansers or ointments for incision care.

The night before surgery, follow Dr. Nodwell's specific pre-operative instructions regarding bathing, eating, and drinking. Remove all makeup, skin care products, contact lenses, and jewelry before surgery. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with a front-closing top to your surgical appointment.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect From a Full Facelift?

When you choose a facelift with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect comprehensive improvement in your facial appearance that looks natural and harmonious. While initial changes are visible immediately after surgery, your final outcome will continue to develop over several months as tissues heal and adapt to their new contours.

Most patients experience dramatic improvement in their facial appearance, including a more defined jawline, reduced jowling, and smoother neck contours. Deep facial folds become noticeably softened while sagging cheeks and midface tissues appear more lifted and youthful. These changes create a refreshed, vibrant appearance without altering your fundamental facial character or expressions.

Your scars will initially appear pink or red and may feel firm to the touch. Over time, they typically fade to a lighter color and soften, though individual healing varies. Dr. Nodwell carefully places incisions within natural skin creases or along the hairline where they remain well-concealed. Most patients find these scars barely noticeable once fully healed.

Facelift results typically last between seven and 10 years, though this varies based on factors like skin quality, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition to aging. While the natural aging process continues, you'll always look younger than if you had never undergone the procedure. Many patients find that after the initial surgery, less extensive "maintenance" procedures may help extend their results in the future.

Factors that influence the longevity of your results include sun exposure, smoking, weight fluctuations, and your skin's natural aging pattern. Following Dr. Nodwell's recommendations for skin care, sun protection, and healthy lifestyle choices helps maintain your rejuvenated appearance for as long as possible.

How Should I Prepare for Injectable Treatment?

Properly preparing for your treatment can help ensure optimal results and minimize potential side effects. While these procedures require significantly less preparation than surgical options, following a few simple guidelines can enhance your experience and outcomes.

In the week before your treatment, avoid medications and supplements that can increase bleeding risk or bruising. Common items to temporarily discontinue include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements. If you take any of these for medical reasons, consult with your primary physician before making any changes.

Alcohol consumption and smoking can both have a negative impact on your final results, so consider avoiding both in the weeks leading up to your treatment.

On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean skin free of makeup, particularly if you're having treatment in areas typically covered by cosmetics. This allows Dr. Nodwell to clearly see your facial anatomy and ensures no contaminants are introduced during the injection process.

While injectable procedures typically involve minimal downtime, some temporary effects like minor swelling, redness, or occasional bruising may occur. If you have an important event coming up, schedule your treatment at least two weeks beforehand to ensure any potential side effects have been fully resolved.

For first-time patients, bringing photos that illustrate your aesthetic goals can be helpful during your consultation. These visual references help ensure your expectations align with what injectable treatments can realistically achieve and assist Dr. Nodwell in developing your personalized treatment plan.

What Results Can I Expect From Injectable Treatments?

When you choose injectable treatments with Dr. Nodwell, you can expect thoughtfully customized results that enhance your natural features while addressing specific aging concerns. While each person's outcome varies based on their unique anatomy and treatment plan, most patients experience significant improvement that preserves their natural expressions and facial character.

Injectable treatments typically provide subtle yet noticeable enhancement without the "overdone" appearance that can occur with less experienced providers. Most people will simply notice that you look refreshed, well-rested, or somehow more vibrant without being able to identify exactly what has changed.

  • Neuromodulator treatments create smooth, natural-looking improvement in dynamic expression lines while preserving your ability to show emotion. Your forehead will appear smoother, the vertical "11" lines between your brows will soften, and crow's feet will be less pronounced during expressions—all while maintaining natural movement and avoiding a frozen appearance.
  • Dermal filler treatments restore volume and structure where time has created hollows or depressions. The results include improved facial contours, softened facial lines, and restored youthful fullness in areas that have lost volume. When performed with artistic vision, these enhancements create balanced, harmonious improvement throughout your face.
  • Biostimulator treatments produce gradual, progressive enhancement as your body generates new collagen in response to treatment. The results continue developing for months, with improved skin quality, subtle lifting, and enhanced facial structure that looks entirely natural.

While injectable results are temporary, establishing a consistent treatment schedule helps maintain continuous improvement. Neuromodulators typically last three to four months, most hyaluronic acid fillers provide six to 18 months of enhancement depending on the specific product and treatment area, and biostimulators can deliver results lasting up to two years.

Many patients find that regular maintenance treatments actually reduce the amount of product needed over time. As muscles become conditioned with repeated neuromodulator treatments, they often require less frequent intervention to maintain results. Similarly, collagen stimulation from certain fillers and biostimulators can create lasting structural improvements that enhance long-term outcomes.

Dr. Nodwell performed liposcution of my upper and lower abdominals, bra roll, banana roll and inner and outer thighs. My surgery was performed under general anaesthesia at the Carleton Place Hospital. I couldn't be happier with the kindness, knowledge, and sensitivity shown by Dr. Nodwell, all the Carleton Place OR and after care staff and all the support staff and the Ottawa Clinic. Although I am only two weeks into my healing, I am already seeing results. I am confident that I will have the results that years of exercise couldn't achieve. I had full body liposuction (waist, inner and outer thighs, tummy, buttocks, back and bra roll) in December 2016. The initial recovery was long, but not overly painful. Dr. Nodwell was upfront about the swelling I would expect and that it would take up to year to see the final results. I am over the two year mark now and I have never felt so confident in my own skin. I had always been physically active but I had gained weight due to poor life choices (too much alcohol) and hormonal changes. Sincer recovery from surgery, I have quit drinking alcohol and I am back to doing the physical activities I love. I have no regrets getting surgery and it has allowed me to make more positive changes in my life in order to keep the results.

I started seeing Dr. Nodwell around 4 years ago, for baby botox. He listened to what I was looking to achieve - a natural refreshed look - and took the time to walk me through what would work best for me, the process, and he made me feel extremely comfortable. I have always been incredibly happy with my botox results! Then, in 2019 we did a second consult for an abdominoplasty! I have two children, was “all belly” and my former 21” waist was stretched beyond natural repair. I am petite and athletic, but the harder I worked out, the worse my abdomen would look which was incredibly frustrating. I had already grown to know and trust Dr. Nodwell through my botox appointments, which really helped me make the decision to finally proceed with my abdominoplasty after 15 years of dreaming about it. I also had him remove a bony growth on my forehead while I was under.Long story short, my only regret is not proceeding with the abdominoplasty sooner, I am absolutely thrilled with my results, and Dr. Nodwell and his staff were a dream through it all.
